How to take an axillary temperature

1. Wash hands, put on gloves. 2. Explain what you are going to do. 3. Check the resident's identification. 4. Ensure that the resident's underarm is dry. 5. Cover the thermometer probe with a plastic sheath and place under the resident's arm. 6. Instruct the resident to leave arm down until the thermometer indicates that the reading is complete. 7. Remove the thermometer, note the temperature. Discard probe sheath. 8. Remove gloves and wash hands.
