How to take an oral temperature

1. Wash hands, put on gloves. 2. Explain what you are going to do. 3. Check the resident's identification. 4. Verify that the resident has had nothing to drink for the past 15 minutes. If so, return later to take the temperature. 5. Cover the thermometer probe with a plastic sheath and place under the resident's tongue. 6. Make sure the resident's mouth remains closed until the thermometer indicates that the reading is complete. 7. Remove the thermometer, note the temperature. Discard probe sheath. 8. Remove gloves and wash hands.
