1. Wash hands and put on gloves. Gather supplies 2. Explain the process to the resident. Provide privacy. 3. Position a hat in the commode or toilet to avoid catching urine along with the stool. 4. Assist the resident to the commode or toilet and allow them time to have a bowel movement. 5. Provide perineal care, if needed, and assist the resident back to bed. 6. Place a small amount of stool in the specimen cup, label, and put into specimen bag. 7. Dispose of remaining stool and the hat. 8. Remove gloves and wash hands. 9. Deliver specimen to designated spot for lab pick-up.
