Learn about the definition for this nursing term.

What is Elopement?

definition

Elopement is the unsupervised wandering of a nursing home, or long-term care resident, away from the facility. This can be a sign of negligence on the part of the nursing home staff. If a staff member failed to supervise residents properly, there is an increased chance of elopement. The danger is related to the mental and physical status of the resident. Residents who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease are at greater risk for harm because they can easily get lost. Residents who are mentally sound but who have physical limitations could fall and get injured. Elopement always puts a facility and staff at risk for lawsuits.
